When the Merchants Start Moving

Ezekiel 33:6 (ESV)

“But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.”

A hooded figure stands near a torch on a stone ledge, overlooking a misty harbor filled with ships, cranes, and a distant clock tower.

I do not need a date to tell you something is moving. This week alone gave me four. A sea gate changed hands. A bloc of eleven nations signed a declaration in Delhi. A drone found a train a few miles from a NATO border. And my own Prime Minister spent three days in Toronto asking the world for money my own government used to be able to raise at home. None of these four things happened because of each other. All four of them happened in the same seven days. Scripture has never asked me to explain that kind of week. It has only ever asked me to watch it honestly and tell you what I saw.

This week, in brief:

  • Houthi forces seized the Yemeni port of Mokha and a strategic Red Sea island, tightening their grip on a global shipping chokepoint.
  • Eleven BRICS nations signed a 140-point declaration in New Delhi, calling for “maximum restraint” in the Middle East while Putin drew applause attacking Western sanctions.
  • A Russian drone struck a train near the Ukraine-Poland border, hours after former UK and Swedish prime ministers had passed the same stretch of track.
  • PM Carney hosted Canada’s first investment summit in Toronto and opened visa talks with the EU, both aimed at reducing Canada’s dependence on a US trade war that shows no sign of ending.

The Sea Gate at Mokha

On September 11, Houthi forces — the same Iranian-backed movement that has spent two years choking Red Sea shipping — captured the Yemeni port of Mokha and a strategic island beside it, closing another hand around a chokepoint that a meaningful share of the world’s oil and container traffic still has to pass through.

Ezekiel 38:13 (ESV)

“Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all its leaders will say to you, ‘Have you come to seize spoil? Have you assembled your hosts to carry off plunder, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to seize great spoil?’”

Sheba and Dedan are not vague names on a map I have to guess at. Most conservative geographers place them on the same southern Arabian peninsula Yemen sits in today — the very ground Mokha’s port occupies. Ezekiel’s picture has these merchant peoples doing nothing but asking a question while a northern coalition moves against Israel. They do not fight. They do not warn. They only notice, out loud, that something valuable is being taken. I do not know if what happened at Mokha this week is the fulfillment of that verse. I know it is the first time in my life I have watched the actual descendants of that region seize a chokepoint by force while the rest of the world does exactly what Sheba and Dedan did three thousand years ago — ask a question, and keep shipping.

New Delhi’s Declaration

Two days later, Modi hosted the leaders of Russia, China, and eight other nations in New Delhi for the BRICS summit, where all eleven signed a 140-point declaration despite open disagreement between members who want the bloc focused on economics and members who want it focused on geopolitics. Putin used the platform to call Western sanctions a dying strategy, to applause. Iran’s president and Abu Dhabi’s crown prince held the highest-level face-to-face between their two nations since their region’s war began in February.

Revelation 16:12 (ESV)

“The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east.”

I am not going to tell you BRICS is the sixth bowl. I have been careful in every book I have written not to claim more precision than Scripture gives me, and I am not going to start in a newsletter. What I will say plainly: Revelation names a coalition of eastern kings whose way gets prepared, not built by them alone. This week, eleven nations — most of them east of the line Rome once called its border — sat in the same room and agreed, in writing, that the West’s economic order is a thing to be replaced rather than reformed. A road does not have to be finished to already be under construction.

A Drone Over the Border

A Russian drone struck a train near the Ukraine-Poland border on September 14 — the same stretch of track former UK and Swedish prime ministers had passed over only shortly before.

Here is Moscow’s own case for why, set out as plainly and fairly as I can state someone else’s argument. In February 1990, as the two Germanys moved toward reunification, U.S. Secretary of State James Baker told Mikhail Gorbachev that NATO’s jurisdiction would move “not one inch eastward” if a reunified Germany stayed in the alliance. It did not hold. Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania followed in 2004, putting the alliance directly on Russian soil for the first time in its history. Then, at the 2008 Bucharest summit, NATO issued a formal declaration naming Ukraine and Georgia directly: “We agreed today that these countries will become members of NATO.” Putin called that declaration a red line at the time. In February 2014, as Ukraine’s government collapsed, a leaked call between U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt showed Washington actively discussing who should lead the government that replaced it — evidence, to Moscow, that the West had already moved from watching Ukraine to shaping it. The Donbas war that followed ran for eight years and killed roughly 14,000 people before the wider invasion ever began. Putin has pointed to some piece of this record every time he has warned publicly that Ukraine joining NATO was the one line Moscow would not allow crossed — Munich in 2007, Georgia in 2008, Crimea in 2014, and every year since.

That is the case Russia makes for itself, and I have tried to state it at its strongest rather than its weakest, because a watchman who only reports the version of an argument that is easy to dismiss has not actually reported the argument. It is Moscow’s account of why the war started, not a settled record of how the war has been fought since — those are two different questions, and I intend to keep treating them as two different questions in every issue that touches this war. A red line only works as a warning if there is still ground behind it to retreat to, and by Moscow’s own account, there no longer is. Whatever else is true, that is why the drone on that rail line reads less like a rumor of war than like the thing the rumor was always about.

Matthew 24:6–7 (ESV)

“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.”

Jesus told His disciples plainly not to read every war as the end. I have tried to hold that same line in every chapter I have written on this subject, and I hold it here. But “not yet” is not the same word as “not close,” and a drone landing on the doorstep of a NATO member a few hours after two former heads of government crossed the same ground is not a rumor. It is the thing the rumor is about — and a nation that has just told the world it has no red lines left to draw is a nation Scripture has always expected us to watch most closely.

Ottawa Looks Elsewhere

Closer to home: this week Prime Minister Carney hosted Canada’s first-ever investment summit in Toronto, pitching the country directly to global capital while Trump’s tariffs continue to squeeze our economy from the south, and floated a figure as large as $1 trillion in new investment. In the same week, he confirmed Canada is now discussing visa rules directly with the EU, which has just opened a dedicated Ottawa office to deepen ties with us.

What did not make the summit’s headlines: four days before he opened it, on September 10, the Prime Minister’s own office announced another $1.1 billion committed abroad — air defence interceptors, a new drone-production initiative, energy loan guarantees, and humanitarian support, all for Ukraine, bringing Canada’s total commitment there since 2022 past $26 billion. I am not going to pretend to you that number is simple. Some of it is loans, not gifts, and reasonable people can disagree about what Canada owes a country under invasion. But it is a strange kind of week for a government to spend asking the world for a trillion dollars while quietly sending more than a billion of its own the other direction, and I think it is fair to ask which of those two commitments actually got the harder look before it was signed.

Isaiah 31:1 (ESV)

“Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the LORD!”

I want to be careful here, because I have already written an entire book arguing that Canada needs to stand on its own economic feet, and I still believe every word of it. Looking for new trading partners is not the sin Isaiah is naming. Isaiah’s charge against Judah was never “you made an alliance” — it was that they ran to Egypt’s chariots instead of asking what the Lord wanted first. That is the only question worth asking about a trillion-dollar summit and a billion-dollar week abroad: not whether Canada should trade with the world or help a nation at war, but whether the nation doing both has asked God anything at all before it asked the world for money — or promised the world its own.

Where This Leaves Us

None of these four stories prove a date, and I am not offering one. What they prove is a direction, and a direction is the one thing a watchman is actually charged to report. A trade route seized in the south. An eastern bloc signing itself into agreement. A drone testing NATO’s edge. A nation, including my own, looking everywhere but up for its next dollar. I do not know the hour. I only know what I saw this week, and I said so.

P.S. — If you have never forwarded one of these newsletters before, forward this one. Send it to your whole email list. Put it on every social feed you have. This is bigger than my subscriber count — every Canadian deserves the chance to see what actually moved this week, and to ask themselves honestly whether they are watching or sleeping through it. Do not let it stop with you. Put it in front of your neighbours, your family, the people in your town who have never heard of the Midnight Watchman and never will, unless someone hands it to them. Let everyone who reads it watch a little closer this week than they did last week.
